History of CarteroniAllan Carter, Mechanic, his story.
Allan began his career as an apprentice in automotive engineering at Commercial Motors in Palmerston North, the then BMW, Nissan, Renault dealer.
After gaining trade certification he stayed for an extra year to study for advanced trade cert.
Allan then went to the UK and worked for BMW dealers in London (Hexagon BMW) and Manchester (Williams BMW). Upon his return to NZ in 1994 he worked at Team McMillan BMW.
Also in 1994 Allan started servicing rally cars domestically and then internationally in the Asia Pacific Rally Series, which he continued to do until 1997. This took him all over South East Asia and while still involved with the Asia Pacific series, Allan moved back to his family home near Mangaweka and worked at Wilson motors in Hunterville, where he became friends with his now mentor Bruce Wilson (GOD!) AND met a female Lancia Beta enthusiast! Lucky Bugger!!
Together they had a stint in Hong Kong with a Mercedes dealer.
On returning from Hong Kong, Carteroni was born.
Carteroni its History. 1997 Onwards...
The name was inspired by a brother in law (remains nameless) who thought the Lancia Beta Coupe looked like an Italian Ford Escort and so called us the “Carteroni's”.
The business was started as a mobile service and repair workshop which operated in the rural Taihape area. Whilst our collection of Lancia cars grew and we started to diversify into classic car restoration and also picked up the service contract for a Quad bike dealer from Taumaranui.
In March 2001 the main workshop was completed and Allan and Alex became Mr. and Mrs. Carteroni with bambina # 1 in tow with Bambina #2 born in 2003.
In 2004 a second and larger shed was built by Allan’s Father and houses the Lancia collection as well as clients cars and our parts department.
We continued to grow the business and attracted more clients with restoration work and race car preparation. Around this time we joined forces with the Lancia Register of New Zealand.
It was in 2010 that we decided to raise the profile of Lancia restoration business by embarking on our 037 Recreation project and the development of Motorsport Recreations.
In 2011 we brought Marty Loughnan on board to assist us with the 037 Recreation build.
2013 saw our 037 Recreation gain its Motorsport NZ Log book and LVVTA Authority Card and LVVTA Compliance to allow registration to be used NZ roads.
Carteroni and Motorsport Recreations are currently testing the 037 Recreation and are about to embark on a program of development of the car. It will be used in a variety of motorsport events and both sealed and unsealed rallies.
It has been our intention from the start of this project to offer others the opportunity to build their own or have us build their own 037 Recreation and in the future other models from the Lancia stable of great race and rally cars.
